Choosing a Pool: Custom, Fibreglass, Plunge or Above-Ground?

Meta Description: Comparing custom pool builds with fibreglass, plunge pools and above-ground options. Costs, timelines, maintenance and what works best for Tauranga properties.

If you're thinking about adding a pool to your Tauranga property, the sheer number of options can feel overwhelming. Fibreglass, concrete, plunge, above-ground — they all promise different things at different price points. So how do you figure out which one actually makes sense for your home, your section, and the way you want to live?

Here's an honest comparison of the main pool types available in New Zealand, what they cost, and where a custom-built pool fits in.

Fibreglass Pools (Pre-Moulded)

Fibreglass pools are the most common in-ground option in New Zealand. They're manufactured off-site in a factory mould, delivered to your property, and craned into an excavated hole. Installation is relatively fast — often within a couple of weeks once the ground is prepped.

What's good: Low maintenance thanks to a smooth, non-porous surface that resists algae. Less chemical use over time. Quick installation compared to concrete. Typically comes with strong manufacturer warranties.

What's limiting: You're choosing from set shapes, sizes, and depths. If your section is sloped, oddly shaped, or you want something that integrates tightly with your landscaping, you may struggle to find a shell that fits. Delivery also requires crane access, which isn't always straightforward on tighter Tauranga sections.

Typical NZ cost: $50,000–$100,000 installed, depending on size and site conditions.

Annual maintenance: Around $500–$1,500.

Plunge Pools

Plunge pools have become increasingly popular across New Zealand, especially for smaller sections or homeowners who want the lifestyle without the footprint of a full-sized pool. They're typically under six metres long and can be fibreglass, concrete, or even prefabricated acrylic units.

What's good: Compact footprint suits urban sections and smaller backyards. Lower upfront cost than a full-sized pool. Less water to heat, treat, and maintain. Can be heated for year-round use. Works well as a design feature alongside decking and landscaping.

What's limiting: Not built for swimming laps or larger families. Limited depth in most models. Pre-moulded options have the same shape restrictions as standard fibreglass. If you want something truly integrated into your outdoor living space, a prefab plunge pool can feel like an afterthought rather than part of the design. Please see attached estimate, we work hard to get this lower to pass back on if possible

Typical NZ cost: $25,000–$60,000 for a prefabricated plunge pool. Custom-built plunge pools will sit higher depending on materials and finishes.

Above-Ground Pools

Above-ground pools are the entry-level option. They range from inflatable setups (a few hundred dollars) through to permanent vinyl-liner and modular steel-frame pools.

What's good: Lowest upfront cost by a significant margin. Quick to set up. Good for testing whether your family will actually use a pool before committing to a bigger investment. No excavation required.

What's limiting: Shorter lifespan — most above-ground pools last 2-10 years before needing replacement. Limited design options. They don't add value to your property and can actually detract from it when selling. Vinyl liners need replacing every 5–10 years at $3,000–$4,000 a time. They still require compliant pool fencing, which adds to the cost. And visually, they rarely integrate well with the rest of your outdoor space.

Typical NZ cost: $5,000–$20,000 for a permanent above-ground pool (excluding fencing and landscaping).

Custom-Built Pools

A custom pool is designed and built on-site to fit your exact property, your vision, and the way your outdoor space flows. At Mr Jones Landscaping & Pools, we build custom pools from the ground up — literally. Every element is tailored: the shape, depth, entry points, surrounds, fencing, paving, and the landscaping that ties it all together.

What's good: Complete design freedom. Your pool is shaped around your section — not the other way around. Ideal for sloped sites, unusual layouts, or properties where you want the pool, decking, planting, and outdoor living areas to feel like one cohesive space. You choose the finishes, the features, and how everything connects. And because we handle the landscaping alongside the pool build, there's no gap between trades — it all comes together as one project.

What's limiting: Higher upfront investment than fibreglass or plunge options. Slightly longer build timeline but once landscaping is completed i.e Pool coping, paving, decking and fencing its very similar timeline to Fibreglass or  Plunge pools— typically 2-3 months from design through to completion, depending on complexity and council consents.

Typical NZ cost: $65,000–$150,000+, depending on size, design complexity, and finishing.

Annual maintenance: Around $1,000–$2,500.

So Which Pool Is Right for You?

There's no single answer — it depends on your budget, your section, and what you're trying to achieve.

If you want something quick and affordable to test the waters (literally), an above-ground pool does the job for a few summers. If you're after a low-maintenance in-ground option and you're happy choosing from available shapes, fibreglass is a solid choice. A plunge pool makes sense for smaller sections or as a design feature alongside an outdoor living area.

But if you want a pool that's designed around your property, integrates with your landscaping, and becomes the centrepiece of your outdoor space — that's where a custom build comes in. It's a bigger investment upfront, but you end up with something that fits your home like it was always meant to be there.
